Our Latest Acquisition...and I'm Afraid

Last Saturday I hitched a ride with my friend Allison to Frenchtown to spend the night with my long time friends Jenny, Josh, and their kids Jacob and Alayna. It was a short but enjoyable visit. Jenny asked me if I was ok to share a room with Alayna the 14-month-old. I confidently said, "Sure! I need to practice being around these babies anyway!" Jenny assured me she would sleep all night and she did...except she kind of snores. Snoring is one of those things I cannot sleep through so I ended up sleeping on the couch in the livingroom. Jenny told me that when I have my own child, if it snores, I will be used to it and sleep right through it. I've wondered before if you get used to your husband snoring and the answer is NO!

Now for the acquisition. Jenny and Josh generously gave to me their Medela breast pump. I intend to breastfeed and will probably need the pump after I go back to work, but I am afraid of it. It looks like a torture device masked by the sleek backpack it comes in. It comes with a wall plug in, a car plug in, and a rechargeable battery pack. I can pump ANYWHERE. Could you imagine us driving down the road passing truck drivers with these airhorn looking things attached to me? I'm horrified!

Montana and Breastfeeding: At my first prenatal visit they gave me an intro packet, Similac samples and coupons, and other literature about medications I can take, and so forth. Included in this packet is a copy of Montana's statute declaring public breastfeeding a natural right and that it is unlawful to prohibit it in public places. I don't know how other states feel about this, but I was shocked that it was even mentioned and even more shocked that it was written in the law books. I guess breastfeeding at the DMV while I wait to have my number called never occurred to me. How do other moms feel about breastfeeding in public?

  1. Pumping never hurt but I never liked it...breastfeeding seems so natural and pumping seems so odd/weird/cow like. The things we will do for our children. As for snoring, Jack can do just about anything and I think it is cute (snoring included) the same does not, and will never, hold true for Troy.

  2. as you will soon learn my friend... you will HAVE to feed on demand and the kiddo won't care if it's in the privacy of your home or a lucky lil's casino at the airport... thank god we won't be arrested for our kids NEEDS! :)
